The Singapore Science Festival is an annual national event celebrating the dynamism of science, engineering, technology and biomedicine. The 2011 edition comprises a one-week mass carnival at Suntec City from 22 to 28 July and satellite events from 23 July to 13 August with a wide range of activities tailored to appeal to everyone, young and old alike.
Previously known as the National Science Month (titled Science.01 to Science.09 between 2001 and 2009), the festival is jointly organised by the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the Science Centre Singapore.
The Festival takes on a new focus and theme this year. In 2009, we encouraged people to ask a fundamental question that drives all scientific enquiry through the theme "Ask Why". In 2010, we urged them to go a step further and discover the answers to their own questions through simple experiments and to "Know Why". This year, we want to remind everyone what sparked their curiosity as children and made them ask "Why Not?". This year's theme also urges people to challenge conventions and explore alternatives to what seem to be absolute truths.
This year's festival is also held in conjunction with the 20th Anniversary of Science and Technology in Singapore, and will showcase how science & technology have underpinned Singapore's economic development over the decades. |
